Short CV

I was born in 1955 in Regensburg, Germany. I am married and have 3 daughters. I received the diploma in Computer Science from University of Bonn in 1984 and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Hamburg in 1989. I was a member of the Artificial Intelligence Group of Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung, Sankt Augustin, from 1984 to 1994 and visiting researcher at the International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, CA, from 1991 to 1992. In January 1995 I became full professor for Knowledge Based Systems at the Technical University of Vienna. Since September 1996 I am chair for Intelligent Systems at the University of Leipzig where I am heading the doctoral programme in knowledge representation. Since 2002 I am an ECCAI Fellow  selected by the European Coordinating Committee of Artificial Intelligence.

Research Interests

Current activities

I was the program chair of ECAI-06,  the 17th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, which took place in beautiful Riva del Garda, Italy, August 28th to Sep. 1st 2006. It was fun to be there!

Together with John Schlipf I co-chaired LPNMR 2007 (Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning), Tempe, Arizona, May 2007. The local arrangements chair was Chitta Baral.

I am also program co-chair (together with Jerome Lang) of KR-2008, the International Conference on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning,  Sydney, September 2008. General chair is Patrick Doherty.

I am a PC member of AAAI-08, JELIA-08, CLIMA-08, ICLP-08, ICAI-08 and several other workshops this year. In 2007 I received the AAAI outstanding senior PC member award. I also belong to the advisory board of IJCAI-09.

I am an associate editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal (AIJ) and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR).

I was invited speaker at the  Spanish AI-conference CAEPIA-05, Santiago de Compostela, at the Swedish AI-workshop (SAIS-06) in Umeå, May 2006, and gave an invited talk at the 8th de Morgan Workshop on Belief Revision, Merging and Social Choice (London, Nov. 2006). I was also invited to speak at the International Conference on Logic Programming, Porto, Sept. 2007, at COMMA (Computational Models of Argument) 2010, NMR-2010 as well as JELIA 2010.

I  am a member of the ECCAI-board (executive board of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence representing 26 national European AI societies) since August 2006. Since July 2008 I am president of ECCAI.

I am co-organizing (with Victor Marek and Mirek Truszczynski) an event celebrating 30 years of Nonmonotonic Reasoning with a number of invited speakers and a regular technical program based on paper submissions. For details check this.
